Nestled near the charming hamlet of Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley Wine Region, Mapleton Vineyard is a family-owned gem, managed by Paul Laing alongside his parents, Denis and Kathryn. The vineyard spans what were once three adjoining properties—Mapleton, Woodlands, and Lynwood. Paul acquired Mapleton in 2004, and after years of envisioning its potential, he and Denis transformed their dream into reality by planting the vineyard in 2014. The site’s gently rolling, north-facing slopes and rich dolomitic soils provide the perfect terroir for exceptional Pinot Noir.
Sourced entirely from Coal River, this Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from Marengo, Brinktop, Bremley, and the Bubb + Pooley vineyard on White Kangaroo Road. The clonal mix is predominantly P96, with a touch of I10V1. Fermentation took place in a single 1,500L concrete sphere (40%) and a selection of barriques (25% new oak), with no malolactic conversion to preserve its vibrancy.
Justin and Anna see this vintage as a step closer to their vision—emphasizing freshness and elevated acidity. Bottled unfined and vegan-friendly, it offers a beautifully layered nose of mineral-laced butter, oak, and honeysuckle. The palate echoes this with a seamless fusion of minerality, delicate florals, and restrained oak influence. In contrast to the modern wave of citrus-driven Chardonnays, this has an almost old-school charm, with exceptional balance, a long, refined finish, and a light, elegant acidity. A joy to drink, reminiscent of fine Chablis.
