Carlei's Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon offers bold, intense flavours that embody the rich terroir of the region. Expect a deeply concentrated profile, starting with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, laced with notes of cassis, dark chocolate, and hints of mint or eucalyptus—typical of Coonawarra’s distinctive cool climate.
The elevated alcohol amplifies the warmth and richness of the wine, giving it a plush, velvety texture. Oak aging adds layers of vanilla, cedar, and tobacco, balancing out the robust tannins and adding a long, lingering finish. Despite its boldness, it retains a sense of elegance, with fresh acidity cutting through the ripeness, leaving a lasting impression of complexity and power.
From a vineyard east of the Coonawarra township. The wine sees 20% new French oak. Deep and hyperpigmented, there’s richness ahead. Generosity here with boysenberry, steeped blackcurrants and mulberry. It’s pretty and the flush of plush fruit is welcoming. The tannins, arresting and woody. It feels a smidge pent up and in need of letting its hair down, though time in bottle will relax and unwind the coils of structure to reveal a charming wine. Nicely done. 94/100pts Halliday Wine Companion
